Keep it simple

Elements

  • For most sentences --one of each
    • Subject
    • Verb
    • (and often) Direct Object
  • Simple sentence:
    • This program was part of the our campaign to raise $5 million for a building in the East Campus.
  • Complex sentence:
    • When calling began, two factors influenced prospect decisions.

Use introductory phrases, clauses with care

  • Misplaced ones can create confusion
    • Taking longer for lunch than expected, our meeting began 30 minutes late.
  • They need to modify the subject of the sentence
    • Taking longer for lunch than expected, we began our meeting 30 minutes late.
    • Better: We took longer for lunch than expected and began our meeting 30 minutes late.
